And once again, hunting in the Caucasus

And once again hunting in the Caucasus with old and dear friends. This time I went with my middle son. He was particularly interested in mountain hunting. We had been skiing together on Elbrus and Dombay, but this was a completely different adventure. The main aim was to hunt with a compound bow. It was my second attempt, but once again I was unsuccessful. We managed to get close, but the tur was startled and disappeared in an instant. As the hunt was coming to an end, we decided that if we came across a worthy animal, we would use a rifle. In the end, an excellent tur was taken from almost point-blank range at a distance of 150 metres. It was truly fascinating to stalk such a cautious animal and get as close as possible. This required not only physical endurance but also skill, patience and a deep understanding of the animal's behaviour.

Mid - Caucasian chamois

Thanks to the expertise of the gamekeepers, within two hours of the hunt we were able to approach the pre-scouted group of animals from above at a distance of less than 100 metres. A magnificent male trophy was taken.

Hunting the Balkan chamois in Bosnia and Herzegovina

My younger son Mikhail and I hunted Balkan chamois in Bosnia and Herzegovina, near the village of Slap. A unique feature of this hunt was that we travelled by boat through a picturesque canyon in search of chamois! We managed to take two male chamois, aged 7 and 9 years. The shooting distance was 220 metres. Many thanks to Vuka for the excellent organisation of this hunt and the wonderful company, which made it even more enjoyable to enjoy the beautiful autumn landscapes of Bosnia's forests and mountains!

Siberian roe deer

A magnificent hunt in incredibly picturesque locations. The hunt was challenging as the deer were extremely cautious at this time of year. The trophy was taken on the morning of the third day of the hunt, despite the high density of animals in the area! According to my preliminary estimates, this roe deer will qualify for gold.

Hunting the Ustyurt Urial

Five years later, I returned to Uzbekistan to conduct the country’s first-ever hunt for the Ustyurt urial. These sheep inhabit a remote area of Karakalpakstan, near the borders with Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. It’s an arid region with vast canyons, the natural habitat of this subspecies of the Trans-Caspian urial. Hunting had never been conducted there before. In search of sheep, we covered more than 20 kilometres in a single day. It soon became clear that the animals were mainly in the lower canyon areas. By the end of the day, we had spotted about twenty sheep, including six rams, females, and juveniles. Two attempts at distances of 540 and 605 metres were unsuccessful; with winds in excess of 10 metres per second, the bullet was deflected by more than a metre. On one occasion, just as I was about to fire at 400 metres, the sheep became aware of our movements and fled. It was only on my fourth attempt that I located a lone sheep, which I shot from a distance of 280 metres. This was followed by a strenuous approach and the challenging task of transporting the sheep back to the vehicle. After an 8-kilometre trek, we returned to the vehicle after dark. The seven-year-old sheep, with its distinctive chest fringe, was gifted to Uzbekistan’s National Museum collection. I also collected genetic material, which will provide a unique scientific resource for studying this rare species.

Kuban tur

A very challenging hunt: heavy snowfall the day before made conditions difficult. Three days of climbing through the mountains were unsuccessful as the tur was grazing high up on the ridge. It was only on the fourth day that I was able to harvest the desired trophy from a distance of 400 metres.
