Kuban tur

Six months had passed since my injury and a challenging knee surgery. I had doubts about whether it was too soon to embark on another mountain hunt. Among the mountain trophies of the Caucasus, I still needed to bag a Kuban tur. However, I also plan to return for a Mid-Caucasian tur, as my previous trophy was ruined by a local amateur taxidermist. Moreover, the trophy itself was less than ideal—a young 8-year-old bull. The Aksaut Gorge. The day before the hunt, the gamekeeper struck me as a true professional, and this impression proved accurate. When we arrived, the horses were exhausted from a previous hunt, so we had to drive to the target slope. From the road we spotted a group of turs and began our ascent through breathtakingly beautiful terrain. Everything seemed to be in our favour, especially the weather. Immersed in the spirit of freedom and the grandeur of the Caucasus Mountains, I pushed on, ignoring the fatigue and the crunching sound in my knee. After climbing about 850 metres, we approached the Turs and came within about 500 metres of the target. The weather and my preparation made the shot possible, with the DS optical sight giving me particular confidence. After assembling the rifle, mounting the optics and zeroing it the day before at 150 metres above sea level, I hit the target at 450 metres with a cold shot. However, I wanted to experience the essence of a real hunt and feel the connection with the animal, so I decided to climb even higher. I started to feel tired, and the stops became more frequent. At one point, I faltered and thought I should have taken the shot at 500 metres. But I pushed those thoughts aside and kept climbing. Eventually, we reached the altitude where the turs were grazing, having ascended exactly 1 kilometre — from 1,830 to 2,830 metres. Setting up filming equipment drains both energy and time. Simply focusing on the hunt is much easier than trying to capture it on film. But in the end, everything came together. I shot the male tur from a distance of 300 metres, aiming for the shoulder. The mortally wounded animal staggered slightly, stood briefly, and then tumbled into the gorge, gaining speed as it fell. The rest of the herd barely had time to react, with some of the turs even continuing to graze. The impressive 13-year-old tur with massive horns will remain a cherished memory for years to come. Well, half the job is done—now we just need to retrieve the trophy and return safe and sound. Arthur demonstrated incredible stamina, single-handedly hauling the entire tur down to the vehicle. During the final third of the journey, my knee began to ache so intensely that, for a moment, I thought they might have to roll me to the car, just like the tur. But in the end, everything worked out. Thanks to the goddess of the hunt, the mountains of the Caucasus, and the hosting team! I am overjoyed!

Hunting the Sayan ibex

I had planned this hunt last year, firmly deciding to complete the Mountain Five by taking the remaining animals. Compared to my previous hunt in Yakutia, this one was relatively straightforward. I flew to Kyzyl on a regular flight and from there travelled by car to the base camp on the shore of the Sayano-Shushenskoye Reservoir. The area was stunning, with sunny and frosty weather leaving an unforgettable impression. The mountains resembled the Caucasus in terms of terrain, but they were lower, and there was no altitude sickness to contend with. My middle son accompanied me on this trip, gaining an incredible experience from both the hunt and the breathtaking landscapes. The trophy was taken on the third day of the hunt with a single shot from 150 metres.
