The annual meeting of the members of the Club of Mountain Hunters took place in Moscow!

On 10 December 2024, the annual meeting of the members of the Club of Mountain Hunters took place in Moscow. This event served as a key moment for summarising the year's achievements, discussing new projects and strengthening ties between Club members. Opening Tribute to Dmitry Germanovich Medvedev In his opening remarks, CMH President Eduard Vitalyevich Bendersky proposed honouring the memory of Dmitry Germanovich Medvedev— a member of the Club, scientific consultant for CMH projects, scientist, PhD in Biology. Dmitry Medvedev passed away in August 2024 during another mountain expedition, leaving behind a significant contribution to the study and conservation of wild mountain ungulates. Year in Review CMH President Eduard Vitalyevich Bendersky reported on the achievements and key highlights of 2024: The Club’s online community now includes approximately 1,500 members. The CMH ranking features 180 Club members, 53 of whom were nominated for awards. New awards were introduced, including the Methuselah Prize for the oldest trophy and the CMH Pantheon for 100 trophies taken from the OVIS and CAPRA lists. Decisions were made to recognise new subspecies, such as the Northern Altai Argali (Mongolia) and the Skardu Markhor (Pakistan). Changes were implemented in the ranking system to encourage predator hunting and the harvest of the oldest male specimens. Conservation Projects The Club continued to implement important projects aimed at preserving biodiversity: Studying the Kharuulakh Snow Sheep: Trapping and tagging of animals were conducted to study their migration patterns. Restoration of Caucasian Chamois and Bezoar Goat Populations: The populations of these species in the North Caucasus nearly doubled, with offspring successfully bred in controlled environments for the first time. CMH Member Doncov I.B.'s "Zavyalov Island" Project: The reintroduction of musk oxen and snow sheep to Zavyalov Island is progressing successfully. In 2024, a record number of sheep were relocated, bringing the musk ox population to 79 individuals. Changes in Leadership Changes were made to CMH’s leadership structure: Evgeny Shirokov and Alexey Tuzov became new members of the Presidium. Sergey Uspensky, Sergey Yastrzhembsky, and Sergey Volochkovich joined the Board of Trustees. New patrons of the Club were noted, including Yuri Chichoyan (Platinum Level) and Dmitry Afinogentov, Sergey Tyutchev, and Dmitry Fedotov (Silver Level). Skardu Markhor

After reviewing information obtained from the Grand Slam Club Ovis regarding the classification of the Skardu markhor in Pakistan as a separate subspecies, it was decided to make the corresponding updates to the CAPRA rating form of the CMH. A new entry, Skardu Markhor (Capra falconeri falconeri skardu), will soon appear in the rating form, and the range of this new subspecies will be described in the "Species of mountain goats" section. A more detailed justification for distinguishing this subspecies can be found link provided.

Implementation of the decisions of the joint meeting of the CMH Presidium and the Trophy Commission in March 2024.

Implementation of the decisions of the joint meeting of the CMH Presidium and the Trophy Commission in March 2024.

At a joint meeting of the Presidium and the Trophy Commission of the Club of Mountain Hunters, a number of decisions aimed at advancing mountain hunting were adopted. In recent times we have heard a lot of criticism of trophy hunting, one of the reasons being that trophy hunters often focus on the size of the trophy. The Club proposes to shift the focus to the age of the harvested animal. To encourage a biologically sound approach, where the priority is placed on harvesting the oldest males, the Club of Mountain Hunters has decided to establish a new award in its system of honors: the annual "Methuselah Prize" for the oldest harvested trophy animal. The guidelines for this award are available on the Club's website, and to determine the age of the harvested trophy, members can use the methodology prepared by Dmitry G. Medvedev, PhD in Biology, Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Ecology and Tourism at the Hunting Faculty of the V.N. Skalon Institute of Environmental Management at the A.A. Ezhevskiy Irkutsk State Agrarian University. The meeting also addressed the issue of the damage caused by predators to mountain ungulate populations. To encourage predator control, the Club's Trophy Commission has decided to preferences for hunters who legally harvest a predator during their hunt for mountain ungulates from the CMH ranking lists. Additionally, a new Club award has been established for the harvest of 100 mountain ungulates from the CMH ranking lists, known as the "CMH Pantheon". The guidelines for this award are also posted on the website. It will take some time to implement the functionalities of the website in accordance with these decisions. In view of this, the Club's administration requests that hunters include the following information in their hunting reports: 1. If you wish to report the age of the trophy, please enter the age as the first line in the "Report Text" field. 2. If you harvest a predator at the same time as a trophy from the CMH OVIS/CAPRA lists, first complete the mountain ungulate trophy report form, then click on the "Add Trophy" button in the same report and complete the second form by adding information about the predator you harvested.

Congratulations to Konstantin Samsonov!

Congratulations to Club Member Konstantin Samsonov on his high results in the GRAND SLAM CLUB/OVIS!Konstantin Samsonov on the Global "Ovis" and "Capra" Slams: “It is no secret that few things unite people like a shared hobby. While hunting itself is a passion for millions, the community of mountain hunting enthusiasts stands as a distinct group. The most authoritative international organization of mountain hunters is the Grand Slam Club/Ovis. Currently, the club boasts nearly 5000 members worldwide. Within the club, there are specific ranks that one can achieve by hunting certain species of mountain game according to established rules. The "Ovis" rank requires hunting 12 different mountain sheep, and the "Capra" rank requires hunting 12 different mountain goats. Beyond these are the "Super 20," "Super 30," "Super 40," and "Super 50" ranks. To date, I have completed the initial global slams for both "Ovis" and "Capra" and received my awards. I am proud of my achievements, having successfully hunted 12 mountain sheep: 1. Blue Sheep2. Bukhara Urial3. Matisson's Argali4. Marco Polo Argali5. Dagestan Tur6. Kuban Tur7. Mid-Caucasian Tur8. Kamchatkan Snow Sheep9. European Mouflon10. Barbary Sheep11. Kerman Sheep12. Esfahan Mouflon And 12 mountain goats: 1. Himalayan Tahr 2. Pamir Ibex 3. Bezoar Ibex 4. Caucasian Chamois 5. The book "A Shot of Hope" by Sergei Yastrzhembskyot of Hope"

The book "A Shot of Hope" by Sergei Yastrzhembskyot of Hope"

Sergei Yastrzhembsky's book, "A Shot of Hope", is dedicated to trophy hunting - a pursuit that, according to the author himself, has changed his fate and defined his way of life for many years. He recounts his travels to various countries and regions of the world - from Alaska to Nepal - in search of rare and unique trophies. In the book, you will find detailed descriptions of both the hunts themselves and the nature and wildlife of the countries visited, as well as the customs and hunting traditions of the local people Sergei Yastrzhembsky emphasises that trophy hunting is not only a sport but also a means of preserving biodiversity, supporting this with examples from global experience and offering ways to develop hunting in Russia. This book will be of interest to professional hunters, enthusiasts and anyone fascinated by wildlife, indigenous cultures and the lifestyles of tribes and small communities living in remote corners of our planet. About the author: Sergei Vladimirovich Yastrzhembsky is a Russian statesman and diplomat. He holds a Ph.D. in History and is a member of the International Safari Club. He is also a documentary filmmaker and a member of the Russian and European Film Academies. From the preface:In my view, the structure of this book reflects the past, present and future (if there is one) of hunting. So the first section, "Yesterday: The Law of Survival" contains stories of my encounters (also featured in our documentary films) with representatives of various ethnic groups - Pygmies, Bushmen, Masai, Chukchi and Inuit - for whom hunting is a marker of their identity, part of their unique culture, and often a condition of survival. This is, in a sense, the "yesterday" of hunting, reflecting its ancient, archaic practices, which all the world's peoples have passed through to some extent. The second section, "Today: The Experience of Trophy Hunting", introduces the reader to contemporary examples of well-organised hunting across different continents. I was particularly interested in the examples of countries such as Mozambique, Liberia and the UAE, where in recent years enthusiasts and hunters have created conditions for the conservation and reproduction of wildlife, enabling the revival of sport hunting. This experience clearly demonstrates that wildlife is an invaluable economic and social asset for any nation, an inexhaustible resource if used wisely. Finally, the third section, "Tomorrow: Hunting Saves Nature" contains my observations and reflections on the contribution of hunters to the conservation of wildlife and its biodiversity. Without this symbiosis, this fusion and mutually enriching interaction between wildlife and hunters, neither nature nor hunting has a future! This is a belief shared by myself and many of my like-minded colleagues around the world. This mission is what the book "A Shot of Hope" serves. You can find details about ordering the book online at the following link: https://boslen.ru/portfolio/

Results of the joint meeting of the Presidium and the Trophy Commission of the Club of Mountain Hunters

Results of the joint meeting of the Presidium and the Trophy Commission of the Club of Mountain Hunters

At the Joint Meeting of the Presidium and the Trophy Commission of The Club of Mountain Hunters, a series of decisions aimed at the development of mountain hunting were adopted. After analysing the information received from Mongolia regarding the designation of a separate subspecies of the North Altai Argali, it has been decided to make relevant changes to the rating forms OVIS of The Club of Mountain Hunters (CMH). In the near future, a new entry will appear in the rating form. The habitat of the North Altai argali will be described in the section "Mountain ungulates". You can find more detailed justification for the designation of this subspecies at the following link. The club is now in its fourth year of a project to study the Kharaulakh snow sheep. This is a challenging project, requiring significant financial investment and complex practical implementation. Nevertheless, the first results of the research and monitoring of this subspecies of snow sheep have been obtained. These results have been achieved thanks to the financial support of the Club's members. The population within the hunting grounds allocated to the Primorsky company has been assessed. However, the population on public lands is still insufficiently studied. Therefore, the following decision has been made: only trophies harvested within the hunting grounds allocated to the Primorsky Company will be accepted for registration in the Club of Mountain Hunters rating tables. When registering a trophy, please attach a copy of the license issued by the Primorsky Company. Trophies taken on public land will not be accepted for registration in the the Club of Mountain Hunters. We ask all members to understand and abide by this decision. When planning your snow sheep hunt, please verify with the organiser the location of the hunt and refer to the description of the hunting grounds allocated to the Primorsky Company on the CMH website. The Club's projects would not be possible without the financial support of its members. Therefore, it has been decided to offer a special price for the purchase of a Kharaulakh snow sheep hunting tour to those members of the CMH who have contributed to its funding. Details of the terms and conditions are available from the CMH administration. Recently we have heard a lot of criticism of trophy hunting, one of the reasons being that trophy hunters often prioritise the size of the trophy. The Club proposes that the focus should be on the age of the harvested animal. In order to promote a biologically sound approach, where priority is given to harvesting the oldest males, the CMH has decided to establish a new award within its award system: the Annual Oldest Trophy Award. In the near future, the Trophy Commission will develop the Rules for this award. Stay tuned for updates on our website. The issue of predation on mountain ungulate populations was also discussed at the meeting. In order to incentivise predator control, the Club's Trophy Commission will also prepare proposals for specific preferences for hunters who legally harvest predators while hunting mountain ungulates from the CMH rating forms. Once approved, this information will be posted on the website. It was decided to establish a new club award (tentatively named: "For the harvest of 100 mountain ungulates from the CMH rating forms"). The Trophy Commission will be responsible for preparing the Rules for it. From 23rd to 26th May 2024 a meeting will be held at the Trophy Hunting Forum in Ekaterinburg. You can find all the details in the presentation. The participants of the meeting draw the attention of all club members to the importance of carefully verifying the locations of trophy hunts in Iran with the habitats presented on the website. This is due to reports of some inaccuracies in the descriptions of the habitats of the species to be hunted provided by local hunt organisers when offering their services.
