Hunt for Chartreuse Chamois

I planned to hunt for this sub species of chamois from 2013 but had to changed dates several times by different reasons. At last I could flew for the hunt in France. The local outfitter was Renault Daso, recommended me by Bernared Loze. He knew lots of Russian hunters. Renault worried that we didn’t have enough time to get the trophy. I could devote to the hunt just one day. The average trip is not less then 3 days. Telling the truth we were lucky with the weather. It was the strong cyclone the day we arrived and  all ridges were covered by the fog. But the weather forecast was auspicious. Fortunately it was correct,  the rain was over and it was clear star night when we went for a hunt. We accommodated in the small village in 50 km from Grenoble. The mountain range of Chartreuse is isolated and comes close to the Alps. The elevation of the mountains there is about 1500 masl and they are covered by thick forests, what makes the task to find the animals not easy. The inhabitants of these forests are red and roe deer, boars, mouflons and chamois. The predators are represented by wolves and foxes. We started to climb at 6.30am from the elevation 1100masl and it took us 40 minutes to reach the height 1540masl. I couldn’t say that it was the easy climb, it was steep and feet constantly slid on the wet grass. After rising to the top we observed the surroundings. We watched lots of the chamois which fled from us. Thickly fallen leaves, branches and loose stones betrayed us and the animals found us before we found them. At some point I detected the chamois and fired but missed. It was not comfortable to shoot through the bushes. We went on to searching. In twenty minutes I spotted the silhouette of the chamois in the forest. I commanded Lui to lay down, because he stood on the line of fire, aimed and made the sure shot. The hit was evident, the chamois fell and rolled down. We easily found it by the bloody track. It was the lonely old female, 11 years old and my 9th chamois from the Capra List. I has to get one more chamois- Anatolian on in Turkey to get the  prize “ World Chamois”.

Hunt for Pamir Ibex

Next day after the hunt for Tibetan Argali we drove to look for the Pamir Ibex. We found the group of animals, three of which had decent horns. We approached at 650m distance and I decided to shoot. I took the comfortable position when Ibex, startled by the noise from the Marco Polo herd, ran up to the mountains. I shot three times from the distance 670m. The last one was successful but I aimed lower than it had to. The goat walked about 1.5 km. We took it next day. The horns were 118 and 119.5 sm.Thank you very much to people who helped me to get it. This Ibex opened the third dozen of trophies from the Capra MHC List.

Hunt for Tibetan Argali

On the third day of the hunt we saw two large males, one of which was good trophy size. We decided to approach at the shooting distance. Sheep noticed us and ran up the mountain. We understood that it’d take just few minutes for them to hide behind the ridge. It was too hard for us to came down, went around the mountain and climbed once again. The height was 4685m. I shot from 900m. The wounded ram moved about 1km and lay down. Thank you very much to everybody who helped me to organize this hunt. This trophy became the 30th  from the MHC List.

Hunt for Siberian Ibex in the Sayan Mountains

The hunt in Krasnoyarsk Krai was organized by Profi Hunt company in October, 2015. The hunting area belonged to Idzhir company. After 4 hours flight I arrived to Abakan, then we drove 2 hours to Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power and went 4 hours upstream the Yenisei River by the high speed boat. At last we arrived to the main lodge. We spent there the first night and rose to the next base which was located on the height 1680 masl. The ascend took us 3.5 hours. We watched some groups of males while climbing. It was the third hunt when I met wolves. I fired the wolf form the distance 680m and missed, they ran away but not far. We heard wolves howl at night. At the first day when we were hiking Vladimir detected two males which grazed on the slope and we decided to approach them later. After a shot rest I tried to reach the males. It took us just 20 minutes, the animals stayed on the same place where we had seen them. I got my 12 years old trophy by the first shot,  from the distance 150 m. It was quick and easy hunt. Next morning we came back to the lodge. It was my 31st trophy from the MHC’s List “ World Ibexex”.

Hunt for Afghan Urial

We found this Urial at the end of the second day. It lay on the stones under the tree shadow near the cliff edge.  Only its back was opened.  I shot from the distance 460m. It was the accurate shot and the male fell from the cliff. We found it next day damaged by other animals. The measurement result is 141.5 point by the SCI system. The trophy takes 6 position in the SCI List. Thank you very much to everybody who helped me to organize this hunt.

Mid-Asia Ibex harvested in Kyrgyzstan and Tian Shan Argali

Me and Evgeny Haritonov, with whom I hunted more the two dozen times, arrived to Bishkek. At the end of the day we reached the base camp in the Kumtor region and spent the night there. Next day we rode to the hunting area, it took us 6 hours. We made the camp on the height 3900m. In the morning we all trek to the place where some trophy males were seen before. In two hours of climbing we noticed them. I shot from 100-130 m, the height was 4200m. My trophy became 10 years old male. In two day I got 8 years old Tian Shan Agrali. The distance was 350m. My appreciation for the professional work to the guides Vladimir, Andrey and Koi-Chu. Many thanks to Evegeny Haritonov.

Hunt for Dagestan Tur

I hunted at the beginning of October in the Rutulsky region in Dagestan. We rode by horses from the village Mikikh to the mountains. The first camp was set on the elevation of 3000 masl. It took us 4 hours to reach that position. In the morning we climbed 3400 masl and met the group of young males. It was foggy and we descended to the opposite slope (height 2700 masl) and camped. In the evening I watched lots of animals on the slopes. On Sunday at 5 am we ascended to the ridge and spotted the group of 15 males. I got my trophy by the first shot from the distance 580m but it fell to the abyss. We found it on the bottom of the canyon. We shot the wolf, while going down, from the distance 350m which hunted the sheep too.

Hunt for Yakutia and Okhotsk Snow Sheep

I booked hunt for Yakutia and Okhotsk Snow Sheep in Haborovsky Krai at autumn 2014. Also I was going to prey for the Reindeer, the Yakutia moose and the Far East bear. Konstantin Kalin and his friend Oleg met me at the Khabarovsk airport on September 13. Next day we all arrived to Okhotsk. The local outfitter Alexander Malkov met us there and we all flew by helicopter to the upper reaches of the Yudoma River where sheep were seen before. In the morning we came to the group of 7 sheep, one of which was very big. I shot from the distance 516m and missed! Next day it was rain and fog and we couldn’t hunt. On the day 4 the guides brought me to the group of 9 males and I made the mistake once again. I chose not the biggest one. I shot from 530m and got 9 years old sheep. We saw more than 30 male snow sheep during these days. The population of the Yakutia Snow Sheep is high there. Then we flew to the upper reaches of the Unchi River. We were going to hunt there for the Okhotsk Snow Sheep. It was rainy for two days. On the day 3 we went to hunt, found two groups of sheep and decided to approach the second one. I shot from the distance 100m and got nice 12 years old trophy. Also I harvested good trophies of the bear, moose and two reindeers. All animals came to the camp. I appreciated professional work of Alexander Malkov and his guides Nikolay and Sasha. Everything was perfect. Thank you very much to Konstantin Kalin and Oleg Abramov who organized this hunt. Special thanks to our cook Alexander who surprised us by his original dishes. I’ll remember tasteful sausages made from deer’s gut which Gendos, who companied me in all snow sheep hunts, took with him

Hunt for Mid-Caucasian Tur

I hunted in Karachay-Cherkessia, my goal was to take bigger trophy and I did it. The hunt was organized in such way that we left one of the assistant at the downstairs to direct us. It was rainy while we were climbing and we all dripped wet. Our assistants helped us to approach animals. My fellow fired from the distance 100m. I shot almost at close range, the distance was about 20 meters. I shot 3 times to the running male and two on bullets hit the aim. My trophy was a 10 years old male.

Hunt for Hangya Argali

The next hunt took place in Mongolia in September, 2015. It was organized by Profi hunt company and its Mongolian partners Tukso and Adjay. I got acquaintance with these guys a year ago and knew how professional they were. They told me beforehand that managed to find the unique sheep and wanted me to get it. After arrival to Ulan Bator we drove about 8 hours to the west. The  mountain range was located at altitudes of about 2000 meters. It looked like a plateau with deep canyons where the sheep inhabited.  These guys rented that area in 2013 and made a great job to conserve and even grow the sheep population. They persuaded the representatives of the local tribes not to pasture their herds in that area what influenced positively to the feed base. They involved the locals to the conservation process of sheep and creating conditions for sustainable development of the population and support them. They also invited the biologist and asked them for consultation how to make it and followed their advices. They made great number of salt places and dug artificial ponds, which were necessary for animals during the spring and fall periods. All these actions made good results. We saw lots of wild sheep being there. The sheep spent evenings on the plateau grazing and went back to the canyon during the during the day hours. Our hunting tactic was similar to the sheep regime, we moved along the canyons  looking for animals. One day I was lucky and shot a wolf, the locals were happy. Telling the truth I was also glad because it was honorary to get a wolf. On the sunset in the second day Tukso noticed the male, I was impressed how he distinguished it in the twilights. Next morning we found the group of animals which was led by our male at the same place. At 8 am we started to move toward them taking into account the wind’s direction and the specific of the landscape. We came to them at 300m but they disappeared behind the hill.  Then the group of 4 males went it around, reached the next hill and started to graze. I, Tukso and our cameraman approached 50 million looking for our male but the rest of the sheep noticed us. It happened very quickly, the sheep ran up to the mountains. The fast shooting didn’t give the result but later we knew that I hit the male to the back leg. I’m sure that you know what hunters feel when the desired trophy is running away. We ascended very fast and followed the animals. I was lucky because could noticed the males in 500 meters, made the corrections and fired. The first shot was accurate, I hit to its back. The second one killed it. The sheep had very impressive size.  I will wait for the results of its measurements.

Altai Ibex

I arrived to Gorno-Altaisk by plane at early morning and in 40 minute flew by helicopter to the hunting base. In two hours more I collected and tested the gun and rode to the mountains. We were riding about 3 hours when saw the group if Ibex, one of which had the wide spread of horns. I shot from not comfortable position under the angle 36 degrees and 360m distance. The Ibex lay down after the third shot. It became darker and the guide went up to get it alone and let it down. It was 12 years old trophy which had 116 and 118 sm horns. The distance between horns was more then 1 meter. We went back to the camp at night. Next morning we saw the group of Ibex and tried to approach them but we late.  One more group we noticed at the late afternoon, the animals started to run away and I had to shoot. The distance was 830m. I got one more trophy with horns  103 and 105 sm. There is great hunting area with high population of animals. Thank you very much to Radiy Anchin and Stalker Group for the organization of this hunt.

Hunt for Aoudad or Barbary Sheep in Spain

The region Extremadura, and the village Navalvillar de pele, located in the territory of Mato Lozano is in 350 km to the south-west from Madrid. The Barbary Sheep was delivered there in the 70th years of the last century from Morocco. The square of the mountain massif is about 2000 ha, and about 300 specimen inhabit there. It’s difficult to define the accurate number because the mountains are covered by the thick forests and the animals hide there. The state gives 5 hunting licenses per year. I arrived to Madrid in July, 27  in the midst of the terrible summer heat, the day temperature rose to 40 degrees. The hunt was carried out in  early mornings and evenings when sheep, not actively, moved through the mountains. They had rest during the day hours and hid in the plants. In the first evening we spotted three males, one of which was the trophy size but they ran away from us to the opposite side of the mountain. We tried to find them next day but without any success. In a day we changed the tactic and drove to the other part of the ridge and found the groups of males there. I fired the male but all bullets went to the left and I checked the sets of the rented rifle. The test showed that I was right, all bullets went left. One more lesson to check the weapon beforehand especially when it belonged someone else's. At noon Diego detected the sheep which were far from us on the opposite rocky ridge but we made the plan, drove around it and started to climb from the back side to be above it. Diego, who stayed on the place, was directing us by phone where to go. This tactic worked well and we managed to approach them. I got not the big male by the first shot from the distance 20m. Then we went down and it was hard because our way led through the thick forest along the steep abyss. It wasn’t the difficult hunt but we worked hard and I hoped it’d be easier. The problem was in temperature and the season. The animals didn’t move actively and preferred to stay in the forest what made hard to find them.

My hunting report from Turkey chase

I made some Russian-Turkish campaign, as they were in our history and want to add some more. Russian guns won most of them except the Crimean one but it’s discussible. I has worthy gun AWMAccuracy 338 LapuaMag. If you know how to use it, the accurate shot can be made to the distance 540-720m. What I hunted already: traditional Bezoar Ibex in Jan. 2015, exotic Konya Mouflon in Sep. 2014, ferocious Tavry boar in Jun. 2015. I plan to prey for Bezoar (Hybrid) Ibex and Chamois, Mid-Asian Red deer. All trips were organized by Stalker Group from Russia and Caprine Safaris from the Turkey side. Caprine Safaris is one of the best Asian companies with American style of work. My chronicle: Konye Mouflon was my first trophy in Turkey from which everything has started. The hunt was predictable and easy. We planned to spend it in 4 days but managed to finished everything in one. My trophy with horns was delivered in a couple of month. Bezoar Ibex.  We hunted with my friend and both got trophies. First day we spent looking for Ibex. This process was organized very well. Early morning we drove to the highland, looked  through binoculars and defined the places which had to be checked. Then we saw moving and decided to come closer. The group of 3 guides and the hunter climbed to the mountain but didn’t find the male. On the next day we noticed the Ibex which was confirmed by everybody. The shot distance is important for me and we tried to take into account the features of my gun. The first shot made the Ibex to run slower and the second one stopped it.  The horns size were 118sm. This this Ibex will decorate my World's Goat collection. The Boar:  It was the night hunt. The boar’s hunt in Turkey isn’t like in Russia, The main strategy to check feeders. They don’t use hunting stand and not sit in a special places.  The corner stone of this hunt is to be imperceptible and came to the shooting distance. Any noise, crunch, creak, cough - can spoil the hour approach. There are many boars but they are wild and shy, you had to shoot not measuring the trophy size, and do it just for luck. The trophies, which we got, had good paramets. The longest fangs were 22.5 sm and 18.5- the shortest ones. Turkey is the nice country. All hunts are comfortable and efficient.  I recommend it.
