I have just  returned from Spain. Took a trophy Pyrenean ibex. Shot with a .300 Winchester Magnum at 206 metres. It was a very uncomfortable position and the ibex was already aware of us and ready to flee. I had to fire immediately. And I hit it, to the delight of myself and my guides.

Hunting in Mallorca

We decided to spend the May holidays in Mallorca to hunt the Balearic goat. The hunt was well prepared. A few months ago the gamekeepers found a large, old male. They had been looking for it for a long time. We approached up to 60 metres. The result was a 15-year-old male. According to preliminary measurements, this trophy will rank 6th in the SCI.

East Siberian brown bear

On the 11th of May I hunted the Siberian brown bear in the Irkutsk region. The hunt was organised by Artem Veselov and the company Profi Hunt. Everything took place on the land of LLC "Lena-Tur". The local organisation was done by Gennady Kiselev, who, as always, did an excellent job. We reached the hunting spot by boat along the Ilga River, then travelled by ATV for 1.5 hours and finally walked for the last 40 minutes. On arrival we surveyed the area, prepared ourselves and waited for "our" bear for five hours. During this time we dealt with the ticks that are abundant in the area. At 22:15, almost in total darkness, the bear appeared. I didn't hesitate and took the shot, bringing the animal down from a distance of 90 metres with a shot to the neck. The whole hunt went wonderfully and I thank everyone involved.

The Reindeer

We were rafting down the river with friends, fishing and hunting. During another overnight stop, I decided to hunt while it was still light. I started walking up the bank of a small river. I walked about 500 metres from the camp and spotted a reindeer grazing about 50 metres from me. I hid behind a boulder, took a breath, aimed carefully just below the shoulder, fired and the animal fell on the ground. The trophy was taken.

Feral goat hunting in Croatia

From the 13th to the 15th of April, 2024, I went hunting on the island of Veli Lošinj in Croatia and successfully took a Kri-Kri ibex on the second day. The challenge of the hunt was the search due to the unusual heat for this time of year, almost 25 °C, and the fact that the mountains were completely covered with tall, dense trees.

Hunting the Mid-Asian Ibex in Tajikistan

Day 2 of the Hunt The second day of the hunt in Tajikistan could unfortunately be called the "day of mistakes". It began in a typical fashion: up at 5am and off to the hunt at 6.30am. Then things started to go wrong. I think it was a combination of accumulated fatigue and a lack of experience of shooting at altitude in conditions of oxygen deprivation. Looking back, I realise that the timing of the trip to Tajikistan was not ideal: after a week of hunting in Kamchatka, I returned to Ekaterinburg on 10 September. By then I had a lot of work to do, which meant three business trips. I finally returned to Ekaterinburg on Friday 7 October and flew to Tajikistan the following morning. To be honest, I arrived in Tajikistan quite exhausted, and then there was the challenge of acclimatising to the altitude. Before the Tajik Pamirs, the highest altitude I had hunted was 3,500 metres above sea level. It seems that all these factors prevented me from achieving my second goal on the second day of the hunt - taking the trophy of the Mid-Asian ibex. That day, an hour after leaving camp, we spotted a group of ibex on the right and decided to approach them from that direction. After about 2 kilometres we climbed 350 metres. The distance to the ibex was exactly 1 kilometre. There was one specimen in the group that I was particularly interested in. According to our measurements, the distance to it was 1 kilometre. I decided to take the shot as the horizon was only at 6%, which made the shot easier. I have experience with such shots - I had practised these trajectories at the shooting range, on the training ground and when hunting for roe deer in the flatlands, so I believed that everything would be fine here. Before the shot, I carefully calculated all the adjustments, taking into account altitude, angle and distance, but I failed to make a horizontal correction. At one kilometre this correction amounts to about 1.5 MOA (about 60-70 cm). Holding our breath, we watched as the bullet flew directly in front of the ibex, hit the ground, grazed it with the shock wave and disappeared from sight. We suspected that the bullet might have hit it, but after realising that I had not made the horizontal adjustment, I had to accept that it was a clear miss. The second failure occurred in the evening. On this attempt, both horizontal and vertical adjustments were made, but due to an oversight I entered 0.8 degrees instead of +8 degrees on the weather station. This was an error of 3/4 MOA (about 25 cm). We all saw clearly - the target through my scope and the team through their binoculars - that the bullet flew just over the ridge of the ibex. If the parameters had been correct, it would have been a record shot for me at a distance of 1,071 metres. But it looks like that record will have to wait for another time. And so ended the second day of hunting and the fourth day of our stay in Tajikistan. Day 3 of the Hunt On Wednesday we moved to another area whose landscape amazed me. The terrain was very different from the previous one, it was like an otherworldly, almost cosmic environment. Almost immediately we spotted an ibex, but it was not of interest as it was only 3-4 years old and the distance to it was only 250-300 metres. It was perched on a rock, making it too easy a target for me. So I decided to continue the search, which turned out to be quite easy. About 40 minutes later we found a group of ibex that were starting to move away from us. Once again it was a test of stamina to follow ibex at 3,960 metres. When we reached a spot where we could see the group climbing directly in front of us, I started to adjust the range. Iskander watched with binoculars. Initially the distance was 570 metres. The ibex were moving away from us, climbing up and heading right through the gorge at an angle of +16 degrees. The distance was constantly changing. When I put my rifle on a small hill, I could take the angle and aim, but the sun was shining directly in my eyes. Iskander bravely decided to shield me from the sun with his body. He blocked the sun and at the same time measured the distance. It was 780 metres and then 820 metres. The ibex split into several groups. A quick decision had to be made as to which ibex to target. The one I needed had a darker coat than the others. At a distance of 808 metres I took the shot. The ibex jumped, walked a few metres and fell. That was my new record for a long-range shot in a mountain hunt! According to the outfitters, it was the first accurate shot at such a distance and angle in their hunting area. Unfortunately, when we reached the trophy, we were not impressed with its quality; the size was only 80cm, indicating a young male of 5-6 years. Iskander was very disappointed with the quality of the trophy, but I assured him that it was acceptable to me and that the distance was the most important thing in this case. Day of departure The hunt in Tajikistan was over and it was time to head home. We returned to Iskander's house, stayed the night and on Thursday morning we set off for Dushanbe. On arrival we were met by Nikolai and his son. We had dinner and the whole team saw me off at the airport. I am grateful to all the guys. Special thanks to Nikolai and his sons for their Eastern hospitality. I definitely plan to return as everything was well organised and professionally handled - hunting, accommodation and transfers. I would particularly like to highlight the breathtaking, otherworldly beauty of the landscape, the grandeur of the high mountains and the area, which is perfect for long range shooting.
