My first mountain trophy

On early morning November 23,  I flew from Moscow to Mineral Vody. My friends met me at the airport and then we drove to the hunting base. The outfitter told me that we would hunt in the Kurtatinsky (Hilak) gorge. The base was located on the altitude 1800 mas. Next morning (Sunday) we were going to leave the base at 4 am and to climb the mountain in the darkness. The plans had been changed and it didn’t depend on us. It was about 10 am when we went for the hunt. First of all we drove up to the mid of the mountain till the altitude 2100m and detected the group of turs. It was 11am when we started ascending the steep slope. It took us  four hours to climb and we rose to 850 vertical meters. There was the only trophy size male which I got by three shots. The shooting distance was 567m at the angle 28 degrees. The third shot hit to its neck and it fell (300 WM cart 230 OTM). We managed to deliver the trophy just on the next day. It was 10 years old male. It was my first mountain hunt and I think that it’s very successful. Thank you very much to the professional team of the North-Ossetia State hunting company.

Hunting for the Isfahan Mouflon in Iran

The hunt for the Isfahan Mouflon took one day on December 13. I fired to the running aim. It was moving in the group of 25 animals. We still don’t know what has scared the animals and why they have  run. Probable they heard or smelled the hunters.  I shot several times to the male which was not the biggest trophy from the distance 260-360 meters. We found three penetrations when checked it later.

For the sheep to Kyrgyzstan

In the mid of November,2019  the owner of PRO Hunt company Maxim Vorobiev and I were going to fly from Sheremetyevo to Bishkek.  At the airport we met our friend Gennady Smirnov who flew to Kyrgyzstan too. He was going to get the trophy of the Ibex. Maxim’s friend Aidar met us in Bishkek. It took us five hours drive to reach Barskoon. The local outfitter Kenesh Baike waited for us there. Then we drove six hours to the Base. It was the late evening when we arrived. We used two cars, the second driver was Azamat. There was one more hunter who arrived from Moscow- Alexander. He was Aidar’s friend. The Base camp looked very imposing. I had never stayed in such bases before.  Next morning we tested guns and moved to the mountains. We saw great number of sheep. It was possible to watch about 200 animals from the one place. There were females and trophy size males but I was looking for the super trophy! We were lucky on the third day when found one of them. We called that male Don Juan because it was very busy struggling with other males and caring for its harem.  That day and the next one we couldn’t approach it. On the fifth day we moved to the mountains very early and were lucky to approach the sheep herd. Don Juan was there. I shot twice from the distance 430m. It ran for a while and fell. That Hume sheep was the nice trophy. When we were going back to the base, one of our guides noticed the group of Ibexes, which pastured in 800 meters from us. We tried to approach them. We went to 208 meters and found that five Ibexes were laying on the ground included the big one. The guides suggested to wait when they’d stand up. They began to move in 50 minutes. The chosen Ibex stood up fast and followed the female. We lost it but suddenly it went back. I fired and it disappeared. We all ran to that place and found it laying on the bottom of the gorge. Thus I got the Mid Asian Ibex. Thank you very much to Maxim Vorobyov, Aidar Okenov, the owner of the Base Kenesh Baike and our guides. It was very interesting hunt. We were there in the peak of the rut season.

Hunting for the mouflon in Croatia

It was short and successful hunt. It was rainy and blew the north wind, which the locals called ‘Bura”. Such  weather was the reason why all animals descended to the bottom of the narrow gorge. But then the wind changed. We drove a little up to the mountains from the seaside and detected the group of mouflons. The herd consisted of females and males with good horns.  But we were looking for the nice trophy with horns not less than 70 sm that’s why we drove further.  We didn’t find one and decided to drove back and check one more time in the previous group. One of the males there had trophy size. I did the only but accurate shot from the distance 100m and got it. Then we made lots of pictures on the background of the sea and islands. I used Sakko 85, cal.300 WSM, optics Zeiss VICTORY V8 1,8-14x50. Thank you very much to our guide Ante, Joseph Tomlynovich for their professional job. My personal thanks to Edward Bendersky for this trip!

Mid Caucasus Tur

Yakutia Snow Sheep

The hunting area was in 760km from Yakutsk and the last 85 km we drove about 3-4 hours by the river’s bed. You need to expect that the way to the base will take 1-2 days. But it took us just 17 hours to reach Yakutsk on the way back. It was -37C degrees when I arrived to the capital of Yakutia but became warmer ( -33C) when we arrived to the base. There are lots of snow at that time already and if the snow crust don’t withstand to the weight you could fall in up to the waist. The density of sheep population was high and it wasn’t hard to find the trophy. But it didn't seem like much fun to approach them. You have to be in good physical condition to climb the steep slopes, covered by snow and short light days make this task more difficult. It took us 1.5 hours to approach the sheep group which included 3 nice trophy size males. I aimed about 20-30 minutes because the chosen sheep hid behind the hillock or females. I could make the accurate shot when my fingers was almost frozen. The shooting distance was 250 meters. Thank you very much to Alexander and his brother Konstantin for the professional organization of the hunt.P.S. You can hunt moose there if you have time. I saw a lynx and a wolverine there.

KCR 2019

I got the trophy in the first day. We spent five hours approaching to the male. The shooting distance was 200 meters. The shot was done at the angle 30 degrees.

Anatolian Chamois

At the beginning of November my wife and I arrived to Turkey. I wanted to get the trophy of Anatolian Chamois. At first we flew to Istanbul and then to Erzurum. The representative of the local company Rasim met at in the airport and we drove to the village Ungular. It took us four hours thought the distance was only 120 km. A half of the way we drove along the winding mountain road. In an hour I’d checked the gun we detected the trophy size male. My mistake was that I thought it’d be too easy to find the bigger one and refused to fire. It was the begging of the rut season. Next five days we spent looking for the trophy. I saw lots of females and young males but not the big one. The luck smiled on the seventh day. Our guide Yanash noticed two males on the top of the mountain but then they disappeared. We observed them in twenty minutes when they were running along the spring. I shot several time but suddenly the guide whistled and one of them stopped. I used the moment, measured the distance and made the accurate shot. It was the great luck. The used rifle is Blaser R8, cal. 300; Win Mag. Thus I got the Anatolian Chamois in Turkey.
