The overall range of the Bukharan markhor:
Previously inhabited most mountainous regions along the northern banks of the upper reaches of the Amu Darya and Panj Rivers, from Turkmenistan to Tajikistan. Currently, scattered populations remain in the Kugitan Mountains on the northern outskirts of Turkmenistan and in south-eastern Uzbekistan, in the area between the Panj and Vakhsh Rivers in the south-west of Tajikistan, as well as in the north-western part of the Darvaz region in the north-east of Afghanistan, near the Tajik border.
