The Gissar-Alay mountain system. Its southern boundary runs along the Alay Valley, through which the Vakhsh River flows, along with its upper tributaries—the Surkhob and Kyzyl-Suu Rivers. The Gissar-Alay mountain system consists of four major ranges. The western and central sections are formed by the Turkestan, Gissar, and Zeravshan Ranges and their spurs, while the eastern section comprises the Alay Range.
