This species is endemic to Italy. It is represented by three small populations inhabiting the mountain ranges in the central part of the Apennine Peninsula, which are part of several national parks: Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, Maiella, Gran Sasso, and Monti della Laga.

* Due to the existing legislative restrictions on hunting these species, such a trophy may be considered if it was harvested with a special permit issued by the competent government authority of the country of origin. Additionally, these species may be included in the rating forms as a photographic trophy, but only under the Super 60 category.
